The Shimano CN-HG54 is a 10-speed chain especially for MTB and touring drivetrains, but it is also compatible with the Tiagra 4700 groupset. It is directional, which increases fluidity and shifting performance (HG-X technology). On a performance scale of 1 to 3, the CN-HG54 ranks in the middle.

TECHNOLOGY

HG-X
HG-X chains from Shimano are 10-speed chains with directional binding. The outside has been optimised for shifting the chainring, the inside for shifting the cassette. This makes for smoother gear changes and higher drivetrain performance overall. Since correct assembly is crucial, Shimano has marked the sides of the chain.
